Hello all. I am finishing my last year of grad school at a DC university in foreign policy and am beginning the job search process. Any advice on how to navigate the local job market, particularly concerning federal employment or contractors especially for someone with a Masters degree but not much related experience?
Go to indeed.com. Best job search on the net honestly. Lists grade level jobs, salary searches etc. I applied for jobs that only required a GED but paid $21.50 an hour.
Since you say you don't have much real world experience don't expect to walk into some policy job. Probably the most common first job in Washington is working for a member of Congress. The pay is low but that's where the action is. Lots of eager, enthusiastic 20-somethings. There is lots of turnover so even though your Master's degree is not needed for an entry level job you might get a promotion in less than a year.
