You have to have world-class food first and there's nothing world class about any of the food vendors in the Union Market.
The only cool & unique thing about that whole development is the recently announced Angelika theatre. That italian store a block away from the Union Market is pretty good too.
Food is DC is a lot of show but not a lot of substance. Think lots of small plates containing 2 bland raviolis covered in Parmesan cream foam for $14.
The only thing extraordinary at Union Market is the Amish ice cream. Mediterranean place was totally blah. Soda place sounded cool till you find out that you're small soda is $5 and is made with bottled Harris Teeter seltzer because they're apparently too cheap to install a proper soda fountain... plus their knishes are average. The butchery makes a decent sandwich but they are tiny.
