Interesting thread. In Boston, I feel like students and transplants are quicker to embrace the "Sawks." It's a very bandwagon thing. You would think they were passing out "Sawks" hats and t-shirts during freshman orientation at every Boston area college or university. There's no DC team that commands that type of following among non-natives.

I suppose the Caps are a bit like that. The Nats had that one good season. They need more success to build a larger fanbase.

DC at its core is a football town. And football allegiances are stronger than they are in probably any of the other 3 or 4 major U.S. sports. So if the Redskins have a good season (few and far between), you've got local fans going hysterical while transplants sit by in mild amusement at best and raging hatred at worst. Then there's the fact that the team's name is an ugly ethnic slur and the owner's a douchebag, which makes it all the more difficult for some transplants to get behind the Redskins.

The Wizards? Eh.

Anyone have any thoughts on DC's facilities? I've never been to a Redskins game (and won't ever go to one) so I have no idea what the stadium is like.

I go to Nats Park and think it's nice but somehow sterile, kinda like much of DC itself. I prefer the old-style parks, like Camden Yards and PNC Park. How come they didn't design Nats field to have an inspiring view?

This is what I'm talkin' about. You can't sit in the stadium without almost having a religious experience:

FedEx is blech. It can be a rodeo trying to get out of there after a game.

The view from Nats Stadium is not the problem. Depending on where you're sitting, you can get a pretty good view of the Capitol.

The view of the Monument, however, is pitiful.

The problem with Nats Stadium is that the focus was first and foremost on economic development. The design of the stadium was an afterthought. What mattered most to Tony Williams was that the stadium be completed underbudget and on schedule (it was).

And the shovels for SE/SW condos went into the ground that much sooner. And the stadium generated a lot demand for housing in its vicinity. But it's hard not to wonder how much better the overall experience would be with a better designed ball park.

For whatever reason, this design has its exhilarating moments, but, in the main, is disappointing. It is not the sort of holistic, surprising, groundbreaking design that many had hoped to see. Not even close. From some points of view, you might even think of it as an office building with a slightly offbeat shape.

I want to agree that the view isn't so bad, but I can't convince myself it doesn't suck. Just the fact that you have to sit in particular seats to get a view of the Capitol is unfortunate. To make matters even worse, the Capitol Dome looks almost lost behind all those other white, blocky, blah buildings. The whole thing just feels like you're sitting in a downtown office building that they cut the roof off of.

You're absolutely right about the view of the Wash. monument. It's almost funny.

Nats stadium is like bad porn for me. I keep going back to it and sort of enjoying it while wishing it were something else.

There's extra allure for me to go visit PNC park or AT&T Park, because they have a nicer backdrop, but as far as grabbing a beer and watching some ball, I like Nat's Stadium just fine. I'm there for the baseball, and I haven't had a bad view yet.

I haven't been to a game at Nats stadium. But I've heard good things about it. I don't particularly care for Verizon Center arena itself. Not the area in general. Just the arena. Seats are uncomfortable no matter where you sit and the sight lines are ok at best.
