Just about every out-of-towner I've met thinks DC is just pronounced "Washington"! Well, I wouldn't have a problem with if we didn't have two Washingtons in our country. I'm not trying to ream anybody out but I'm just questioning why non-natives always call it that? They must know how confusing it is, right?

What does it have to do with how the word is pronounced? You mean how some say it like "WORSH-ington"?

Most non-natives after spending more than a year here do not necessarily call it washington. The more time they spend here, the more likely they will call it DC. Also those from the pacific NW will always call it DC.

We have way more than two Washingtons in the country. Fix Charlestown and Charleston in West Virginia before you bust our chops about Washington.

I've mostly heard foreign visitors and foreigners in general use 'Washington' more than 'Washington DC' or 'DC'

Its fairly common to hear the phrase "the other Washington" in reference to D.C. when you're in WA state. We also have Vancouver WA vs. Vancouver B.C. to disambiguate.

What we call the west wasn't even part of the United States when George Washington was alive. LOL.

I kinda hate that Washington state is named Washington. George himself chose DC as the capital of the United States, right up the river from his home. The area that we now refer to as Washington state wasn't even known by the Founding Fathers. Yet the state is the one called Washington, and the city now has to be called DC to avoid confusion with the state. Kind of sad really

Nobody outside the Pacific Northwest is confused. If you tell someone from London that you live in Washington, he doesn't ask if you are in Seattle.

Yes & no. I travel a lot for my job & people overseas know that Washington means the capital city, but people in the US are so used to hearing "DC" that if you ever say Washington they look confused & say "Washington state? or DC?"
