I just recently accepted a job in DC and will need to rent a room, so I went on Craigslist looking as well as posting that I need a room and what I am looking for. Within a day I have been getting emails on available rooms but I am very skeptical as to whether these are legit postings and emails from legit people. Can anyone who has had experience looking for a room or apartment on Craigslist particularly in the DC location give me some helpful tips on what to look out for other than the obvious "if it's too good to be true, it probably is", any experiences that I could learn from when looking for a room to rent?
1. The price is too good to be true for the neighborhood in question.
2. The post or the email is very poorly written. Some spelling and grammar errors is one thing. The entire message written in broken english is another. This is a very large red flag.
3. The person is out of town and does not have a manager, or somebody else within DC you can contact and meet.
Finding a room in DC is an adventure on it's own. But these CL scams make it much worse. Once again, I am glad I own a house. It should be noted shared houses can be very competitive in DC. Many have waiting lists, and I am not joking.
