Suppose I wanted to walk from a location south of 295/395 (in SW) to the Smithsonian Castle. From looking at a map (I'm not in DC yet), it seems that 4th street, which passes under the freeway, is the only pedestrian-friendly way to cross 295/395. Are there other sidewalks that I didn't detect on the map?

4th and 7th both work well. 4th Street is slightly narrower, more trees, less traffic. 7th Street is wider, more traffic, and is sunnier (fewer trees, I guess?). Of the two, I usually walk up 4th since it's shadier. 9th Street might also work, but I've never done it on foot, so who knows.

You can also do South Capitol Street further to the east.

And the L'Enfant promenade from the Fish Markets, past a big foundtain, over the freeway and under the DOE directly to the Castle itself. I guess that is what, 11th street technically?
