There are small neighborhood groceries, but most seem to make regular visits to the Harris-Teeter on Potomac Avenue, or now at 4th and M Streets SE, or the Safeway at 14th and D Streets SE. Beats driving out to the burbs for groceries or taking Metro to Courthouse and back because of the Safeway at the top of the escalator.
More likely walk to Eastern Market and change at Metro Center. There are lots of garages in Capitol Hill alleys. It depends upon what you are looking for. You might just use ZIP or CAR2GO and bag owning a car all together.

Train changes are an evil. No one likes them. For most, Eastern Market would be a hike anyway, so might as well just head for Union Station and have a direct shot over to DuPont instead. It would save about 10 minutes in train-time and also 15 cents.

Run down carriage houses, you mean. Many with no direct access to any home. No fun hiking around in the alleys at night. A few houses do have proper garages of course, but they are way in the minority.

Many do, but Uber may be eclipsing those other two these days. And don't forget Capital Bikeshares.
