I need to get out of my current teaching job (lots of reasons I won't bore you with here) and notice that a lot of DC charter schools are still advertising for teachers. What is up with this? My first inclination is that they are horrible places to work. If I try to look at the bright side, I say maybe enrollment is up?

I know they pay less than DCPS, but it would probably be close to what I am making now (how come the 'good' DC suburbs filled with rich people pay teachers less than DC and Maryland?)

I'm not expecting anything close to perfection. But I'd rather be in an environment that is truly dysfunctional rather than one that pretends it isn't, holds itself up as a model of excellence to the public, but has some sketchy practices to 'prove' that excellence.

If you know anything about the DC charters, are there any ones to particularly avoid? Also, is there age discrimination? I notice on websites that most of the teachers look like they are 12 years old

I think from what I've read, charter school teachers are expected to spend a lot more time at work than public school teachers. That would help explain why most of the teachers are young -- people burn out quickly probably.
