Downtown DC retail has come a long way in 10 years, but how does it compare to the retail mix and foot traffic of Pentagon City? I'm defining Downtown as the broader F Street, Gallery Place, City Center mix.
Pentagon city is probably more affordable. Outside of Macy's, Forever 21 and a few other stores, DC has gotten very expensive. The new stores on H between 11th and 9th are way over priced. Georgetown or even K street might be an option.
DC has Georgetown and now the downtown shopping district. Personally, I would take DC between those two locations.
Personally, I never saw Pentagon city as that competitive. It's Tyson's that is really the other obvious option. Tyson's is still the better option, but that has been shifting in the last year.
Pentagon city is really still primarily a nordstrom and a macy's, and some smaller retailers. Yes, it has an apple and microsoft store. Beyond that it isn't that special.
I would not consider the new stores downtown overpriced, they are luxury retailers, if you are not in that price range, so be it.
Make the trip out to Tysons. The range of options cannot be beat, almost all brands of all types of products are offered, be it mid-range or high end luxury.
I agree, if you want to do some real shopping go to Tyson Corner, it really helps that it is metro accessible via the Silver Line now.
You can also get some really great deals at the Tanger Outlets at National Harbor. It's a little more difficult to get to if you do not have a car, but it's only a 20 minute drive from downtown DC.
I freely agree Tysons is better than Pentagon City. But, for this discussion I only want to focus on inside the urban core. Pentagon City is literally across the river. Tysons maybe technically be reachable on the silver line now, but it is quite a hike via public transit/taxi/uber from central DC.

Well, in that case Pentagon City is probably still better than DC for shopping - simply based on the variety of stores and anchor stores that they have.
For exclusively high-end shopping, DC (CityCenter) is better.
