This time you are right. I don't know how Beltsville is considered Southern Maryland, but I do know something about that commute. I lived in Beltsville for 6 years. First of all, North Bethesda is a good suggestion now that we know they meant Beltsville rather than Southern, MD. Second, someone else suggested Metro to Beltsville, but Metro does not go there, and the bus connections are horrible. On the other hand, Metro to Arlington is a very good idea, and the bus routes are better. I suggest they think about living in Beltsville or near Beltsville. Silver Spring fits well.

Many areas in DC proper would be the best midpoint between Arlington and Beltsville. I wouldn't rule DC out. I don't know what you've "heard" but there's a lot of misinformation about DC from people who don't live there. I would make sure whatever source you're consulting actually lives in DC. The suburbs don't count--a lot of people from the Maryland and Virginia burbs almost never go into DC and have wildly inaccurate assumptions about life in the city.

Be more specific. What's your budget? Do you want to live in a more walkable area near metro or do you prefer something more suburban?

Hyattsville and College Park would be more affordable but I would personally hate to live around there. I assume you have a car -- parking in Arlington and Capitol Hill is much easier than a lot of parts of NW DC.
