While this is not entirely relevant to people on the outer edges of the metro system, it is very good news for those of us who live inside of DC, or at least inside the beltway.

Metro now has reasonably priced monthly transit passes. While some cities do have a better deal, this one is at the very least decent. It's called metro selectpass. Metro - Fares - Reduced Fares

As it currently stands you can purchase a pass that starts on April 1.

In light of all the problems, this shows they are trying to move in the right direction. People have been asking for a monthly pass for years. The 28 day pass they came out with last year, was too expensive and missed the point. While these two options they are offering now are somewhat limited, they are still worthwhile for many of us, and reasonably priced.

Either way...it's an improvement. Even if it's a small one.

I wonder if Federal Agencies will start offering the Select Pass for employees. That could be a huge boon for ridership.

You can get it using the federal transit benefit.

Thats actually a good thing for tourists. The $1 surcharge for paper cards was very confusing for them. It was such a stupid idea from Metro.

The paper passes were bad in general, it is good to see them gone.

Doesn't seem like a good deal. My fare is 2.70 peak (tenley town to metro center) so I'd have to get the $135 monthly plan. I only use the metro on M-F. It would be cheaper to pay the full fare. I guess if I didn't have a car and used metro for everything it would be good.

I think you would have to ask for your transit benefit to be put on a credit card like they do for people who buy VRE or MARC passes. It's a ridiculously complicated process.
