Why not live in the District? Alexandria and Arlington are nice but have become about as expensive as living in DC, if you work in DC then you might as well live in DC..
Why settle for Virginia when you can live in the District. You haven't told us where you work but places like U Street, H Street, Capitol Hill, the Navy Yard, etc are all dynamic and provide a much higher quality of life than available in Virginia. Sell the car and put the difference into living.
I don't agree with this. I actually prefer Old Town and the Carlyle district (right around the Eisenhower metro). There are plenty of amenities.
Depending on what you want and where you need to commute to, I agree with all the PPs that say you're limiting yourself aritificially by being stuck on VA. If the red line works for you as a commuting option Silver Spring would be awesome, as well as the neighborhoods near the SS or Takoma metros (Takoma, northern part of Brightwood). Lots of dogs in those areas as it's very green and leafy for DC, and downtown silver spring is its own little urban hub but it's not far from trails and parks, either.
