So I've been living in Navy Yard for 4 years now and I'm ready for a location change in October when my lease is up. There is a possibility I'll be taking a job in Michigan Park so NE DC is an interest of mine. Out of these neighborhoods which would you pick to live in? I'm single, late 30's, don't enjoy too much craziness in the neighborhood but would like decent dining and bar options as well as grocery store and gym. Here are the areas I'm thinking of. I don't plan on buying, just renting for the next couple of years.

1) Petworth
2) Mt. Vernon
3) H Street Corridor
4) Ivy City
5) Bloomingdale
6) Columbia Heights
7) NoMa

Driving or using Metro? I would find a place off of Red Line like NoMa or Brookland, if Metro.

Avoid NoMa. It's unnecessarily hyped up, extremely overpriced, still lacks in many amenities and still remains ghetto, despite what a lot of people may tell you.

I work in NE and recently moved to NoMa. It is not ghetto.

And if you read my posts here you will know that I have a low opinion of all things ghetto. I would never live in a ghetto area. Either you have never seen a real ghetto or you don't know what it means.

My advice...Brookland. It seems like a natural fit considering how close it is the Michigan Park.

NoMA is not bad but kind of bland, H Street is only if you are looking to live in an entertainment area and will be driving to work, yet want to deal with fighting for parking.

I really kind of hate Columbia Heights these days, plus getting to NE is not as convenient as you would think.

I would NOT move to Ivy City.

Columbia Heights sucks. Even with all the new retail and restaurants.. it still maintains a pretty trashy vibe.

What is Ivy City like? I've actually never been there. Maybe I'll go by this weekend.

Ivy City is in the very early stages of gentrification. It is also out of the way.

I would skip it.

So Brookland is a nice area with things to do? How about Mt. Vernon? I like the idea of living near Chinatown.

Brookland is a nice area with things to do and a very good choice considering where you work.
