wow thanks for all of the replies! I am really interested in living in dc but I am just finishing up my degree and it seems that housing is pricey - are there any areas around dc that are a bargain but still nice -compared to dc proper? Thanks again

have you looked at del ray in alexandria? how far out do you want to go?
My friends and I love Alexandria. We're near the King Street exit off of 395, which isn't too bad price-wise (mainly because you can't walk to a meto; my roommate and I take a bus to the Pentagon). It's an easy drive most places, you're close to Old Town and Del Ray (also a nice area to look). I also have friends in Arlington near the Glebe Road 395 exit who really like it there (again, can't walk to the metro, but they have a courtesy shuttle and then a regular bus), and know a bunch of people in Pentagon City (big plus: metro). Keep in mind that all of the people I've mentioned are entry-level fresh-out-of-undergrads and most are gov't employees
