I am a young professional moving from California to DC to start a new job end of March/early April and was wondering if there are other city-data'ers in a similar situation. If so I thought we could share moving strategies and perhaps have a friendly face when we move to the city.
I'm not sure who the moderators are, but they maybe able to help you in meeting people through the city-data events. You might also check on meetup.com as they arrange groups (based on interests, etc) that do meet in person.
People say a lot of DCers go in and out (b/c of the political cycles), which makes meeting people (and forming longer relationships) a bit difficult.
I am moving there in 2-3 weeks and am looking for a single family home with a yard. I'm 31, female, veterinarian, have one cat. Would you be interested in looking together?
Sure. I'm not sure how far from the city you wish to live, but I've found that the Rockville/Silver Spring/Cheverly areas in Maryland offer decent commute times at a somewhat affordable price. I am interested in renting a place in the city for closer proximity to work and since I don't think I will be bringing a car with me.
I admittedly have some degree of reluctance to meet up with people I meet via the internet, if I haven't interacted with them on-line for an extended period of time. However, I'll be moving to the DC area (downtown Silver Spring) in mid-March. I've always been thinking about ways activities I'd like to be involved in where I could meet new people.
I can't help too much with the moving strategies, because the federal government is largely taking care of that for me.

You pretty much just wrote out what I'm doing. Flying out tuesday to look at apartments in Rockville, Arlington, and District. I'm leaning towards Arlington, cause it seems like a shorter commute.
I found a great little place in Tenleytown (near American U.) for a reasonable monthly rent. Never underestimate Craigslist. I will be moving out to DC last week of March. Good luck everyone!
