There are two aspects about the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP):
1. Currently DC-area residents are put in county/city/DC jails if they're accused of federal crimes (in particular people brought up on espionage charges AFAIK go to Alexandria City Jail in Virginia). Doesn't it make sense for the BOP to build a federal detention center in the DC area like they have in New York City, Los Angeles, and other areas?
2. Currently DC-sentenced felons sent to the BOP can be sent hundreds of miles away. Shouldn't the BOP designate federal prisons in Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland to be the destinations of most DC inmates unless they are extremely dangerous (ADX Florence for men and FMC Carswell for women would be places for them), are very ill, or if they have special requests (an Orthodox Jewish prisoner wishing to go to FCI Otisville in New York)?
