Starting new job in 2 weeks, friends recommended looking in Glover Park due to schools, is this a good area for young couple with 2 small kids. any recommendation for which area of glover park, street addresses etc.. Have been searching for a few weeks but it's hard with kids. went to look at places a few times so far. What are crime stats? What are reasonable prices to buy/rent. Saw a property for 790k for 2 bedroom, two in the mid 600s (all under 20 years old, 750-1,000 sq ft was our criteria). Decided to pass on coop as want to build equity if buying. Any advice appreciated.
also any other locations in DC we should be looking at for a family used to ohio suburbs (wide spaces, clean, good schools, groceries). thanks
also, is tenleytown better/nicer, we have not been there yet but just googled it on this forum and a friend had mentioned they have lived there briefly, liked it but they are single so don't know about schools or properties (they rented).
Also, what about parking? Do you advise buying parking, and if so, where?
Both Glover Park (close to Georgetown) & Tenleytown are good hoods. The best hoods are generally west of Rock Creek Park/16th St. There are good ones east too. I no longer live in DC so am not up to date on parking.
I suggest you look at this place during the open house on Sunday, October 30th: 3690 38th St NW APT C237. The price is $495,000 for a 2 bedroom, 1 bath, but it may get offers above the asking price. McLean Gardens is a very safe, desirable area, with well-rated schools. Parking in on-street, I believe.
If you are interested in renting in the District, I suggest this place at $2775/month for 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, including all utilities: 4100 W St NW APT 101, Washington, DC 20007. The price is appropriate, and it is walking distance to Stoddert Elementary School.
Is there a reason you have to live in the District? When people have school-age children, they are more likely to look in Maryland or Virginia, where you will get more space at a more reasonable price. Anything in a good part of the District is going to be ridiculously expensive, compare to the rest of the country. I see you come from suburban Ohio. You would find Arlington and McLean Virginia more similar, also Rockville and Silver Spring, Maryland. These areas will offer housing with yards, and you will have decent Metro access into the District for the job.

DC schools (K-12) are generally excellent in the NW quadrant of the city. A little-known area due to its geography is the Palisades neighborhood on the far west side on a bluff above the Potomac River, just west of Georgetown University and GU Medical Center. It's a safe/quiet family-friendly area with its own commercial area along MacArthur Boulevard. Check out this unit...
Some considerations: Glover Park is not close to a Metrorail stop. One needs to ride a bus to the Foggy Boottom rail stop. The buses are often noisy passing the buildings.
The other is that many DC condos are in older buildings and have window units for air-conditioning and radiators for heat. I found it hard to sleep in the summer with the window unit rattling.
On the whole I think the OP would prefer a suburban rental.
A friend of mine and his wife and son lived in Glover Park and loved it. It seems like a very safe area that is family friendly. It's also close to Georgetown, which is nice.
