I will be visiting Bethesda MD for a few weekends in the next few months. The last time I was there I drove down Wisconsin Ave from Bethesda to Georgetown and it was a very enjoyable ride. I was wondering if you could recommend some roads that I can drive into Washington DC rather than taking the highway. I would like to know some areas that might be nice to visit and walk around. I'm a little familiar with the area right around the capital. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Instead of driving down Wisconsin Avenue from Bethesda, drive down Connecticut Avenue instead. Connecticut Avenue is about 1/2 mile East of Wisconsin and runs parallel to Wisconsin into the city. Taking Connecticut will take you through Chevy Chase, Van Ness, Cleveland Park, Woodley Park and Dupont Circle before ending at the White House. Actually, if you stay straight as you pass K Street with Farragut Square on your left, Ct.Ave becomes 17th Street and takes you past the Old Executive Office Building and eventually ends at Constitution Avenue just west of the Washington Monument.
You can stop in any of the areas/neighborhoods that I mentioned above and walk around (assuming you can find parking )
Depending on where in Bethesda you are, you might want to drop down from Falls Rd. to MaCarthur Blvd. to see Great Falls National Park. Don't drive all the way in to DC on MaCarthur, though, it's far too slow. The Clara Barton Pkwy. is also a lovely way to see the Potomac River and the Canal.
I second the recommendation for stopping over at the National Cathedral on Wisconsin Avenue.
You can also take River Rd. from Bethesda toward DC, take a right onto Goldsboro Rd., and a left onto Mass. Mass Ave. Mass will take you into the heart of DC passing by the Naval Observatory, Embassy Row, and Dupont Circle.
