I would like to hear some opinions about the safety of the neighborhood around the National Arboretum. I would be taking the metro+bus to and from there (to get to work and back). My mother lived in D.C. in the early eighties and has only bad things to say about the area, but she's been trying to scare me out of relocating. Has the area improved since then?
I lived in D.C. for eight years and advise you to look elsewhere. Many of the neighborhoods in the vicinity of the Arboretum (e.g., Langdon, Ivy City, Trinidad) face significant poverty and crime issues. With that said, there may be a desirable pocket of residential streets I'm not aware of.
Thanks yankee.peddler. I am only looking to work there, I am planning on living in Arlington. It's just that my mother's under the impression that even travelling to and from the metro, especially after dark in winter, is a bad idea in that area. It seems like she's right?

Kind of.
People live there and do that every single day. It really comes down to your tolerance of crime and 'street' activity.
Take a look at the crime map for the year and you can compare that to other parts of towns. Will help you make a more informed decision. I used 2200 S Street NE. Not a lot of violent crime this year, but slightly higher number of property crimes. Worth adding your own address to see.
p.s. that would be one hell of a bus ride to get there from VA.
Yeah, I was originally looking there. From doing a search on this forum, it looks like finding an apartment in Silver Spring would be better (on my budget, too).
Thank you so much for the link!!! It looks like there has been one theft in the past year around the bus stop area (24th & R Streets NE). Not too bad. I currently work at a university that acts as the figurative railroad tracks; one side faces the rich part of town, the other side faces apartment complexes with poverty and crime. It looks like there were more crimes in the past three months where I currently work than in the past year where I would work in D.C.

I lived in Silver Spring until moving to the Midwest this summer. Silver Spring is more convenient (and affordable) than Arlington if you're commuting to the Arboretum area.

I walked from Gaulludet University to the Arboretum and back 5 days a week for 8 months, (April-December 2008). I am male, skinny, and white. I never had a problem. However, I did see things in NE D.C. - particularly in the zone of Trinidad- I would not like to live around; drunks drinking away in the open, prostitutes and tenants alike who would scream obsceneties at no one and everyone, ample trash and broken glass, and neighbors cussing each other out. It's not a nice area at all, but I was never the victim of a crime. No B.S. here. Just don't hang around at night, and act like you know where you're going. You'll be allright.
