I am driving from Virginia to Baltimore this weekend and was wondering if I should go through DC or around it? I am leaving Va around 5:30pm - not sure when DC's rush hour is... Any advice?
There really isn't a 'through' DC route. They didn't build a freeway that goes just straight through, so your options are to go up to a point and then catch some surface streets and muck around a bit.
Now, if this is a time thing, go around. Just loop around 495/95 on the Beltway. You can take the BW Parkway up to Baltimore or stay on 95 (I think most would probably take the Parkway to save a few miles of travel).
If you want to see some things, come in, hit the museums, then come up 395, see stuff. Then come out on the 395->Pennsylvania Avenue Bridge -> Kenilworth Avenue / 295 North which becomes the BW Parkway.
But if you are just passing by, just pass by and loop around.
If you are looking at just passing by D.C., I would highly recommend going around it. They have some pretty bad traffic in the city.
