I saw on the Bellingham City-Data page that their poverty rate is 23%, which seems very high for being such a nice city. Here in Phoenix, the poverty level is only 18%, and I feel that this city is very run-down (in my opinion, of course). Does anyone know why Bellingham's poverty rate is so high?

it's the college student population. a high poverty rate is typical of most college towns. Nothing to worry about.

Not alot of good paying jobs compared to the cost of living here...plain and simple. Being a college town doesn't mean it's ok to have an enormous % below the poverty level.
