One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that Kitsap County is indeed a suburb of Seattle, but a much different type of suburb that most are familiar with. This is because you have to take a Washington State Ferry to get there, unless you go well south to the Tacoma Narrows toll bridge. If this doesn't matter to you, fine. Go for it. But it's not like living 30 miles from Chicago and getting into town in a half hour.

Someone previously mentioned Gig Harbor. I would go with Gig Harbor as far as relocating. It's not too far from Silverdale, within an hour. My husband and I lived in Silverdale WA and didn't like it. we always travelled to Tacoma WA or Seattle to find things to do.

I think you will like Silverdale just fine, though if I were working there would prefer Poulsbo. It's more quaint with better water access and a very short commute. Either way check out Central Market in Poulsbo, we stop there whenever passing through. A good friend lives on the Hood Canal in Silverdale with fantastic views but something like that, if you could find a rental would rent for more than double your budget, while a more typical newer tract home would be at the high end of your range.

I would heavily consider Silverdale or Poulsbo. Most people who work here don't commute, this is the area most people live in and then commute to Seattle.

That said, I second (third?) checking out Gig Harbor. It's about 30-40 minutes away but it's a nice halfway point from Silverdale and bigger cities. There is a ferry in Bremerton that takes an hour to get to Seattle. Driving also takes about an hour. From Silverdale, Tacoma is about 45 minutes.

There IS traffic going in to Silverdale in the morning, and out in the early evening because of shipyard traffic. It's actually Gorst, but you have to go through there.

Silverdale also just got a Trader Joe's. So new stuff comes there every so often.
