I grew up there. After being away for 7 years, I am amazed what a dump it seems like now. Casinos and Hooters have sprung up since I was there. Crime is higher than where I am now. Our car insurance went down when we moved.

I would look at Kent, Bellingham, maybe Puyallup. Stay away from Tacoma, Federal Ways, and Lakewood. There are also LOTS of Army guys around Lakewood, so if you have a daughter, I would thing twice(voice of experience!)

You ever watched COPS? Half of the episodes are in lakewood (I think pierce county may have helped COPS get its start).. but when watching copy you can always count on pierce county for some good meth/swat action.. lol

Hi, I just want to say I will give you my personal opinion..based upon the fact I was born and raised in Lakewood / Tacoma..I was raised in Lakewood..by Gravely lake drive..very nice area and still is..we lived on Idlewild street...very nice neighborhood again..I will say just like any city there is crime. I am now living in Dallas metroplex area and compared to this Lakewood is peacful...yes cops has been there many times but they've been to a lot of cities, shouldn't be your main reason for not moving to a new place..and yes s. Tacoma way area does have crime but I have walked down the street's just fine.. There are a lot of nice restaurants there.. the housing market is way cheaper then Seattle which actually a lot of people are buying in Tacoma and commutting to Seattle. It sounds like the other post's just aren't people from there, just people that moved there and got caught up in the wrong crowd. Seriously it's not the worst place to live..but it does have pocket's just like any other city. But also try North Tacoma and west Tacoma..I think you'd enjoy it there...you'd be right next to the zoo and gardens...plus a whole lot more..good luck..hope where ever you decide to move it's a good one!!

p.s. I moved only because I got a job in Dallas not because I didn't like it anymore

I'm currently looking at a place in Lakewood by Gravelly Lake / American Lake along Washington Blvd SW.

Do you people know if this area is reasonably safe ?

You can live in a neighborhood with homes on small lots or acreage allowing for horses etc...
Shoping is close as is good places to eat.
I second this suggestion. I love these areas mentioned above. When moving here from Arizona we had to stay a month in Puyallup for my husband's job training, then moved up to our permanant location in the North Sound/Everett area.

Gravelly Lake/American Lake/Wash Ave area is okay. Too bad the rest of Lakewood is a warzone and you have to travel through it to get anywhere.

Default Is Lakewood really that bad?

Is the area around Lake Steliacoom in Lakewood bad? I've been told that it is actually a nice/safe area?

We are moving out of L.A. to get away from the high crime.. so please if it really is as bad as you say.. let us know before we sign the lease.

On the other hand if there are people out there who actually live in the area does anyone have anything positive to say about any of Lakewood??

I seriously suggest you look elsewhere. I dont think theres any section in Lakewood that is good. And like someone else said, all the segments on "cops" from washington, are shot in Lakewood, or around it..so yeah lol.
