I agree about Cle Elum and Thorpe, but there are no jobs in either. As for Easton, the one family I know that lived there insisted that people there eat each other. Hopefully they were kidding but they said it was a little "deliverance", with population under 400, no business and many abandoned buildings.

Whatcom County is nice. A bit too "HIPPY" but overall a nice place!

I don't know any places in Easter Washington well enough to put them on my list. But I hear Eastern Washington is wonderful!

I would say maybe Issaquah, Sammamish, Covington, or even North Bend. You'll be right next to the mountains, near lakes, not too far from the coast, and can drive an hour to get to Seattle. Anywhere in Eastern Washignton you'll be stuck in the middle of no where. The places I mentioned kind of have it all: close to the city, but far enough away to enjoy nature.

I can't believe no one mentioned Olympia. It's right on the tip of Puget Sound with views of the Olympic and Cascade Mountains as well as Rainier. Evergreen State College is located there and well known for being a "hippy" type of school. It's an artsy community and pretty liberal. Sorry, there are still track homes, but the east side and lower west side have the older homes. If you don't mind rain with 1 or 2 weeks of snow in the winter, this area is for you.
