I want to be in a place where its cold/rainy/&snowy because I love that type of weather, I just don't want to be smothered by it so i would like to have all four seasons but not where summer is extremely hot like it is out here. So basically what I'm looking for is a diverse place to live in a city with a lot of big amenities, I'm originally from Los Angeles, so I want to be in a city with lots to do, and public transportation, friendly, and safe. I would really like to gather a lot of information before I take a trip out there so I would know where to go to look at houses and things like that. Please! Please! someone help me who lives or have lived in western and eastern Washington !
Most everywhere in the nation is warmer than Long Beach (on average) during the summer. Seattle is your best (and really only) choice within WA, but you will be smothered by the (relative) cold and rain.

You might also consider San Francisco and Denver.

vancover also has a pretty thriving night life now days.
further more or has its owen suburbs as does wa so there is no need for people to keep saying vancover is a suburb of or when it is not.
with this sad i agree on seattle for the west side and spokane for the east side to answer the o.p.s question.
lastly i understand we all are owen opionion and this is just fine and i have no problems with this.

instead thruth is vancover is not a suburb of portland.
instead or state has its owen smaller towns that are suburds of portland
Hmm... I guess I understand the gist of what you're trying to say here and will address a couple facts.

Sure, Vancouver is a free-standing city in its own right. [Just like Bellevue is a free-standing city in its own rights; with having the 2nd most urban DT in WA, a large population with great diversity and some nightlife... It doesn't change the fact that it is still a Seattle suburb.] Vancouver mostly functions as a Portland suburb, it is very well tied to Portland and is even incorporated in its MSA. Vancouver may have the 4th largest population in the state of WA... but watch the evening news, it's all about Portland and its going ons. There is no (TV) news station that is set in Vancouver and focuses only on what's going on in Vancouver. If Portland wasn't around/didn't develop-- Vancouver would not be the same town it is today. Yes, Vancouver is older than Portland. Yes, Vancouver could've been the state capital (and did served as a capital for the PNW territory). Yes, Vancouver has an illustrious past serving as a major hub and once an important fort. Yes, its been a boom-town a couple times over. Yes, a lot of people live in the Vancouver area and love it. These are all nice facts about Vancouver.

But let's address what's its not:
  • Vancouver does NOT have a lot of racial diversity. To say it has a lot of racial diversity like Seattle is to be ignorant of the facts. Seattle: Seattle (city) QuickFacts from the US Census Bureau and Vancouver: Vancouver (city) QuickFacts from the US Census Bureau If one wants racial diversity in that general area, s/he would be better served being in the Portland area. If one wants a lot of racial diversity in WA, then quite frankly, the Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma area is the best and pretty much the only option.
  • Vancouver's DT area was up-and-coming... but that stopped dead in its tracks in the wake of a bad economy. It was not vibrant before and still isn't now. Quite frankly, for the size of the city's population, the DT is woefully small. Vancouver is a "fairly large city" because of the number of people that live there and yet... Majority of the big-city amenities are in Portland.
  • Anyone who says that Vancouver has a thriving nightlife... needs to get out more.

Yeah, you just can't get cold and rainy AND snowy in WA. But, Seattle is less than 2 hours from really great ski places. So you can have your cold and wet in Seattle, and head up to Snoqualmie pass and play in the snow.

The majority of eastern WA looks like this:

Ummm, is that the Western WA attitude toward Eastern WA? Just because you can see a view like that from I-90 doesn't mean that's what "the majority" of Eastern WA look like. Have you ever been to the NE of the state? Or the Okanogan Highlands? Or the Palouse? Or even Ellensburg? They all look completely different than that.

To say that the majority of Eastern WA looks like that picture is no different than showing a picture of a sidewalk and saying that's what Western WA looks like.

EDIT: On second thought, maybe you're being sarcastic?

Well, here is the view from my cabin in eastern Washington.

The view from the back deck:

And here is the view from my primary house facing south.

We tried to buy one of the scenic lots like in your picture, but they were all owned by western Washington residents wanting top dollar for their scenic views!! We are still happy with our views, though we keep looking!!

Here's another picture from the cabin. I do have to admit that I purchased this cabin from a western Washington resident. He had enough of the view and location and was getting rid of it.

The neighbors all thought I was crazy to pay almost six figures for the house and property. So it was still overpriced, but at least he wanted to get rid of it.

Nice pics, 509!

I recognize the house pic - looks like just north of Fancher Heights, right? The cabin pics I'm not sure - Leavenworth or Plain, maybe?

Wow, sorry, jeez. Didn't mean to ruffle feathers.

I live here, this is 1/2 mile from my house.

I have lived here all my life.

I will rephrase: A "good portion of the wild land" (better?) of eastern washington is dirt and sagebrush.

You didn't "ruffle any feathers". I was just trying to say that, in my opinion, you dramatically mis-represented Eastern Washington's beautiful variety of climates and topographies by trying to pigeon-hole 2/3 of the state's area into one picture.
