Are you looking for an area to live - or an area to hike?

If it's a place to live, are you planning on commuting to Seattle (is that what you mean by 1 hour away - because an hour away during rush hour is a whole lot closer than an hour away on the weekend)?

A place to live. On average 1 hour or less to get near Seattle.

To be honest, during rush hour there are some places IN Seattle that take almost an hour to get to Seattle downtown area. I honestly can't think of anywhere you could reliably get from a rural area to Seattle downtown in an hour. The closest rural areas would probably be on the east side outside of towns like Woodinville or Issaquah. The east side commute is also the most hectic though due to the bridges.

Like the last person said, are you planning on going to Seattle during commuting hours or do you just want to be able to visit Seattle on the weekends or something like that? BIG difference.

North Bend would be your best bet - easy access to the freeway (I-90) and from there it is a stretch (though usually congested) shot into Seattle. If you are not looking to get into Seattle proper, but just into the developed areas of the Greater Seattle area, this will give you an easy (and fast) commute into a very developed section of the metro area (specifically Bellevue).

The fact is, traffic anywhere near Seattle is simply horrid during rush hour (and not necessarily that much better at other times).
