I doubt a trip permit will get you off the hook with the dealer. It's really just a heavy paper that you tape to the rear window. It would probably making it glaringly obvious to the dealer that they would need to pay for new tabs. Probably better to call the dealer and see if you can work something out with them to where you get some of your cost back.
I think my tabs were $54 this year. On a 2010 Dodge Ram 1500
Lady Fern might be right. $150 seems high to me too.

U didn't buy much GTM for $54. My VW Pickup is more than that, (But used to be $25, BEFORE the tab cost went DOWN...).

Minimum GTM (GVW) is 1.5x empty weight. NOT cheap for trucks, RV, SUV.

I went back and looked at my records. I was wrong. They charged me $48.75 for my Harley. $48.75 for my wife's Harley. $48.75 for my wife's car. $48.75 for my truck. GVM or GTM seems to have no influence on the price they charge for tab renewal in Spokane county.
