headed to San Juan for a few days of camping. planning to go on a whale-watching tour and trying to figure where to spend the rest of our time. are there good hikes that aren't too intense? We'll have 2 kids with us. are there certain spots that are better for kayaking? I'd love for them to be able to see some wildlife

I took my daughter out on a kayak from Bellingham once, through a Western Wa Univ. group. She was only around 4 years old. We went out to some island, which is a wildlife refuge, don't remember the name.

Everything was great until we started heading back to shore. The waves got really scary, and i realized this was a really stupid thing to do with a small kid. We made it back safe, but I learned my lesson. She loved it, though, LOL! Had no idea we were in danger.

So, my advice would be wherever you kayak, stay close to shore. The weather can change quickly and get scary. If you just kayak close to shore, you should be fine.

You could go to say, Lopez Island (haven't been there in a hundred years, so not sure if it's changed), and rent kayaks and just kayak around the island close to shore.

EDIT: found this link. Still going strong on Lopez Island:

We took a guided kayak tour on Friday Harbor one year. It was so neat - saw a colony of seals and the water did not turn rough but do believe that could be a possibility. I would hope the guided tour company would check seas etc before heading out with a group. My husband and I were in a two man kayak.

One thing to be aware of: if you decide to go to a place that caters to hot tubbers make sure you see first if bathing suits are optional. Who knew. Boy were we embarrassed - we were theonly one in bathing suits - we still laugh about it some 15 years later.
