We visit either Vancouver or Victoria 1-3 times a year, and just enjoy spending time there. From here it's 3 hours, so closer would save a lot of time. On the other hand, we also like to visit Portland, so being right in the middle has advantages.

benefits of Vancouver USA: (just a few...)
Best Farmer's Market in WA (Largest too) (Ymmv)
CHEAP living, little traffic, less crime.
Fishing... MUCH!
Columbia Gorge, hiking, pics, recreation, vibrant business climate.
Close to Portland: (but far enough away to stay 'un-weird' )
Go Timbers
5 min to 'sales-tax-free' shopping (which I don't do since I have WA based business tenants that need revenue to pay WA B&O (on gross proceeds) )
Cross-border tuition and choice of 20+ colleges with 20 minutes
EZ traffic to Portland in the 20+ 'off hours / day'
JOBs (that come with 9% OR income tax, but nice to have the option if you are starving (BTDT...))
Very artsy city (Portland) with EZ access to CHEAP venues (Usually free)
PDX... How about getting to an excellent FAST / CHEAP international airport in 5-7 minutes? No waiting in traffic or commuting across 30 mile wide town (SEA-TAC), or meeting ferry schedule or paying bridge tolls (Oly peninsula)
Food trucks?... hundreds available most within 20 min.
Beautiful OR coast; 1hr
Wind Surfing - 40 min
Downhill Ski - 50 min
Volcano - 1 hr

Benefits of being CLOSE to BC: (opposite side of We_t WA... 6hrs apart via auto)

Healthcare / urgency care rates that are 'affordable'..
CAMPING - extraordinarily EXCELLENT in BC
Skiing - Ditto
OPEN SPACE without the usual USA axe murderers / illegal grower ambushes / survivalists. (You will find these in back country WA)
True International culture without USA 'Group-think' / media - social bias. (As in TRUE international residents, not USA wanna-bees) REFRESHING to us who have made a practice to live and raise our kids internationally.
Quality of life and products (especially food... though you will PAY for it with USA dollar in the tank)
Access to Vancouver Island and Victoria (really nice variety of terrain / people / foods / activities / true wilderness) (Lived on Thetis Is. as part of International living w/ kids)

Access to Bellingham, very nice locale and culture, great University.
Access to Mt Baker.
Edaleen Dairy

So you drive up to Vancouver, BC, and then what do you do there that you couldn't do in, say, Portland, OR?

ummmm, LOTS if you are an 'international' as is OP.

USA is pretty sterile (white), (especially Portland and Seattle)

OP also mentioned recreation. BC is many times better than USA side for outdoor recreation. (having lived in both).

I'd try Atlanta. You can get a lot there for $130k.
