Hello everyone, My husband has spent a lot of time in the Bremerton area over the past 3 years. He has been sent to the shipyard over their from here to do various jobs etc. My husband and I have decided to pack up and move that way. What areas within 30 miles of Bremerton are nice to live with a family? I am moving from hampton roads Va and am very excited and nervous at the same time. Has anyone moved to the PNW from the east coast and how do you feel about your decision?

I would recommend Poulsbo, a quiet and peaceful small city about 20-30 minutes from Bremerton. It's also a short drive to the Seattle ferry and that ferry (Bainbridge Island) is shorter then the Bremerton Ferry. Silverdale is between Bremerton and Poulsbo, and has all of the shopping and restaurants. Silverdale itself has some great homes along the Hood Canal with great water and mountain views, but they are pricey.

Poulsbo or Silverdale are my recommendations
(or somewhere in between)

Thank you. I have been looking at homes in Poulsbo. Kinda nervous on this move, so any recommendations help. I have seen some homes on Bainbridge Island that are absolutely amazing but out of my price range at the moment.

In addition to the suggestions of Poulsbo and Silverdale, I'd also recommend checking out Gig Harbor as a possibility. Also take a look at the Manette, Illahee, and Brownsville neighborhoods of Bremerton.

If your hub is working for the Shipyard during day shift, check out Kitsap Transit's Worker/Driver bus routes. We live about a half a block from a stop and it is so convenient. My PSNS worker can read the paper, sleep, or just converse with friends on the way to work and doesn't have to worry about finding a parking spot: Worker Driver Bus Program

Bainbridge Island is actually about 45 driving minutes from the shipyard, unless you have a personal watercraft to cross the Rich Passage. (I'm not completely joking. See this link to a Kitsap Sun story about a commuter who uses a water bike: http://www.kitsapsun.com/news/2007/Nov/29/bainbridge-island-to-bremerton-hey-whatever-your/#axzz2jkWcdu1j) The Agate Pass Bridge is the only drivable way onto the island and the drive from Shipyard to Poulsbo is about 30 minutes and then on to Bainbridge is another 15-20.

Thanks for the worker driver bus program idea! hahaha oh my goodness, a water bike?! clever Have you all lived in Wa state your whole life? How do you like it? If you have ever been to the east coast is it better in your opinion. I have spent about a month out there. (my husband flew me out to try to convince me to move) I was out there during November through December.Spent time in Bremerton then we went to Whidbey Island for a week. I liked it, and the rain doesn't bother me. The only thing I noticed coming back home to VA is that the air kinda stunk here lol and I was driving slower than I usually do and everyone around me seemed to drive very very aggressive. I felt really safe when I was visiting their. Is that a false sense of feeling??

prosin: I've been researching a move up there as well. There is an opening in my husband's field in Gig Harbor. He already interviewed in Port Angeles, and we may hear back in Jan. Is Gig Harbor a good place for families...9 yr.old and 12 year old. I've found very little on Gig Harbor, except the houses look beautiful and well...the whole area looks gorgeous.

Sorry if that's off topic...just wanted to hear more about Gig Harbor..may help the OP as well??

GIbornNBred, I have actually read several different people say similar things to what you are saying. I heard everyone is really passive aggressive in the PNW. I really don't know for that I haven't lived over there yet. Do you want to come back to the east coast or are you happy with your decision? I am moving over there with my husband and 2 daughters. I am leaving behind my family and friends. I don't want to move over there and it be hard to meet anyone and I become lonely. I'm 26 and still like to meet people. I really did like the vibe over there though.

I am leaving behind family and friends. I will be moving with my 2 daughters and husband. Have you tried to meet other transplants from the east coast? Other than not being able to connect with people easily over there, how is the quality of life? Do you want to come back to the east coast or are you happy with your decision?
