My husband and I are considering to move back to WA and wondering is Poulsbo would be a good choice for us (we want to be near the water and Scandinavian activities). Visited there once for a day. What are the good and no-so-good points?

I think it would be a great choice, we have considered it for retirement too. It does get a little more rain than Seattle, and has congestion on summer weekends from people taking the Bainbridge ferry to the Olympic Penninsula, especially the main road, highway 305. Those are the only negatives I know of. Central Market there is about the best grocery store I know of anywhere. They have Walmart and Home Depot but just about anything else including theaters is only 10-15 minutes away in Silverdale.

weather and housing / living costs (and ferry issues / expense) are the few negatives.

Silverdale and Bremerton being close is a positive (Harrison Hosp... one of top in USA for it's size)

I would not like being so far from a college / culture events, and too far from the airport for me. (I fly out of PNW a lot during winter months)

YMMV

Poulsbo, WA is a PRETTY good choice for retirement.

Good to hear that it has a good hospital nearby. Being closer to good medical care is one of our top criteria. We have tried NM now for the past 5 years and driving 3 hours one way for medical care gets old fast as does driving 1.5 hours for groceries & gas. There are plenty of cultural activities in Seattle--wonder how long it takes to get into Seattle from Poulsbo and if the ferry wait is long at any time during the year.

Does anyone know what the rental situation is like is Poulsbo? We have a big dog and 2 cats so might prefer a house over a condo. Our dog is a couch potato and doesn't bark but one cat needs lots of indoor room for playing ball.

Las Cruces is great, if you can stand NM.

Ferry is no wait if you don't take your car (Public transit available on Seattle side)

RE Rentals.. Try Padmapper.com

Thanks, will look at Padmapper. We can't stand NM, the Land of Entrapment, and want to move back to western WA or possibly OR as second choice. Have lived in NM since 2007 and moving here and building a house was one of the biggest mistakes I've ever made.

I make the trip back from Port Angeles about 4-5 times a year, through Poulsbo. To the Bainbridge island ferry is only about 20 minutes, then 10-15 to load, and 35 on the water. Just don't do it in a car on Sunday afternoon-evening in the summer, when there are many tourists/weekenders going back from the weekend. Holiday weekends are even worse. I have seen 2-3 hour waits to get onto the ferry. You do have options, because it's not much farther to the Bremerton Ferry, which is a longer sail but never as busy. If you can find a place to park, or take a bus, you can walk on any time without waiting.

Home rentals are much less expensive than the Seattle/eastside area, but there are not that many. I would guess that any given time there are less than 20 houses for rent in Poulsbo.

I have found places for rent on Zillow too. http://www.zillow.com/homes/98370_rb/

Good luck with the move, sorry for the hassle, we all make 'mistakes', especially on housing. I just don't want to be thinking I'm gonna build another house when I'm age 80. Tho I hope I'm able! I have build / created 3 farms and each time got chased away by taxes. It is very disconcerting to spend yrs making barns, wells, sheds, soils, orchards, roads, fences, ponds, GATES, soil conservation projects, wells, power and water systems, then eventually a home, and get kicked off due to taxes... I'm TIRED.

My WA taxes went from $800 / yr to $14,400 / yr ($40 / day). That is not 'sustainable' in retirement.

Building a house can be such a pain. Building our house in Seattle went smoothly and stayed within budget thanks to 2 great contractors building the house. Here, in NM, the experience did not go well. We left the Seattle area due to high property taxes and we are being taxed the same amount down here!

Thanks for mentioning Zillow as an option for finding rentals. Know anyone who wants to buy a house in sunny, dry, New Mexico?
