Try SoCal during the hot Santa Ana winds...or sucking up ashes during an urban brush fire... now that's living!

I will never live in any part of California as I probably dislike that state more than the Northwest.

I'm with TrueTimbers and Lamplight. I think what I've seen of the weather there beats living in the south..by miles.

It's really as simple as different people preferring different weather. Some people like hot and humid, some people like cool and dry, some people like cool and humid, some people like hot and dry, some prefer clouds, some actually require a certain minimum of sunshine, etc. It's a good thing we all have different preferences. It becomes a problem for people when they're stuck in a place where the weather is oppressive to them (I know how this feels from personal experience).

Then again, I guess we're lucky that our lives are so easy we can actually discuss weather as a comfort issue, and not simply something that grows our food.

The double edged sword with living in WA is the air is fresh and the humidity is low in summer.

So after living here for a long period it can still cause issues in regard to lack of sun and warmth, but it can make living most other places in the US unbearable. I don't think I could go back to anyplace that's truly humid and hot. I feel claustrophobic and can't breathe.

However, I still love the smell of a hot summer night and the smell of a first snowfall.

Ideally, I'd love a vacation home somewhere warm and dry when I need to get away.

What does TrueTimbers mean by "...but the northern OP"? What is the northern OP?

I'm glad TrueTimbers and thisplacesucks brought up latitude and taking that into consideration when moving to a northern state. I never took that into consideration. So now I have to think about that and SAD. Wet cool weather does not bother but I have no idea how well I would adjust to these two things.

Another thing...I used to work in the motion picture industry when I lived in SoCal and I've been thinking about Northern WA state and Canada. If this type of weather is so bad then how is Vancouver able to have a thriving film industry?

I just hate what's happening to California and I just can't live here anymore. The weather, the air, the overcrowding and the politics...everything. Without getting into a political/social arguement I can no longer bear the encroachment and restrictive nature of California's system. I hear people talking and it seems to me that CA is going to soon turn into some type of totalitarian environment. There was a time when I was growing up that I viewed CA as a safe place and you never worried about your freedoms. Everyone seemed to get along and the prevailing attitude was, "You do your thing and I'll do mine and we'll all get along and be happy.". That's not the case anymore.

I don't know..Is there a section of this forum for ex-patriots?

Grew up in San Bernardino, CA and currently live in Grand junction, CO. Have family in Portland/Salem metro area and Depoe Bay/Lincoln City OR. My first visit was in 1988 (I was 12 then) and I have tried to get back ever since. Now my current profession has afforded me that opportunity and it's much closer to becoming a reality.

Oddly enough, my wife suffers bi-polar and depression, and rainy overcast weather makes her feel much better. The whole Seattle is the suicide capital is a myth, it is actually Chicago with 200 plus days of sun. We both hate the heat and love the rainy overcast with some sun.

Olympic Peninsula

You know, Port Angles, Sequim, Port Townsend...

Yep latitude... Should not be taken lightly.... Tough virtually all of Europe is north of us....
So we should not whine too bad.

Another Place, do not get too hung up on the latitude thing, it's just one of many things to consider, it doesn't effect everyone, & it certainly wouldn't make me leave here. I would *not* return to CA for the reasons you list, & where I live there are already too many places where, if I blink, I could swear I'm driving in a SoCal housing tract! Aaaahhh! If there is a forum for ex- pats, I'll join you, I also hate what has happened there.

I guess Vancouver has a motion picture industry because there are sunny, cloudless days there, as there here on the OP (like today). Doesn't Toronto sub for NYC a lot?
