Folks,
We are moving to the area in October and will be looking for a rental home. I will be working around 11 and Broadway in Tacoma. How is living around Yelm?

Having lived here for 48 years now, I can honestly say what Yelm actually stands for is - "yes everybody loves meth". If you move here be sure to keep everything locked all the time.

Yikes! The previous post is a real downer. It discounts the fact that many, many very nice people live in Yelm. I've been here almost 40 years. Are there any cities out there that are crime free?

It's a great area, beautiful and fairly affordable. Just be aware that it is also the home of JZ Knight and all of her followers, you'll see the "enlightened ones" all over town with dreamy smiles: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._Z._Knight#Ramtha

Wouldn't Yelm have different neighborhoods in it? Surely it can't be 100% tweaker.

Bump...
Is it actually trashy and drug-infested in Yelm? Or is it just rural? We are PCSing to the area this summer. How does Yelm compare to Puyallup, Roy, or McKenna?

On a scale of 1-100 with 100 being the safest, Yelm is a 4, Puyallup 2, Roy 34, and McKenna may be too small to rate on the site I use, but is 34% more crime than the state average. I wouldn't have considered any of them when we had kids, but the city where we ended up is rated at 80. All cities will have some areas better than others, but generally most surrounding JBLM have high crime rates.

I've lived in Yelm since 2003. Came here for the low cost of living and to be away from the hustle and bustle. Please don't move here, the growth in population has been crazy, traffic is horrific, the Starbucks and the Safeway are so packed it's not even funny anymore. I disagree about the safety issues - I live in one of the better neighborhoods and never had any concerns. I even left my garage door open overnight by mistake several times, with my car unlocked and my purse in it, and nothing ever got stolen. Lost my wallet and phone several times of the years at Walmart or Safeway, and they were always returned to me without anything missing.
