As a WA state resident and ultra-conservative, I think it's funny how liberals claim our successful state as one of their own. As per its current laws, WA is one of the most right-wing states in the Union.
  • No Sales Tax.
  • No Income Tax.
  • Harshest death penalty. WA is one of the states that kills the most criminals and still has hanging on its list of acceptable execution methods. We made short order of Ted Bundy.
  • Business-friendly. Um ... Hello? Amazon, Microsoft and Boeing, just for starters? We have an extremely business-friendly climate. The only reason Seattle has as much wealth as it does is because of Microsoft employees who had company stock in the past generation.

Ok, so we legalized marijuana and accepted gay marriages as legitimate. While I agree with the former and disagree with the latter, I think they are trivial issues compared with the above points. The supposed $15 minimum wage is a joke and will be repealed before it takes effect.

Why does everyone think that WA is a Liberal state? We elect Libs to govt positions, but that doesn't mean our success is built on being libs.

1. Please tell us where in Washington you live and pay no sales tax. We'll be there in a jiffy.
2. "We" made short order of Ted Bundy? Tell that to Florida!

Bundy was electrocuted by the state of Florida.

DC Sniper? Yeah, he pretty much did what he wanted here. Navy Yard shooter? He got a pass as well.

That's not liberal, that's due to some weird combination of the hardcore right wing-iness and progressive politics. Let the crazies be, and let them have guns.

Sorry that some of your facts were wrong, but I find it weird that you're okay with people doing what they want in private, and also not doing what they want in their private lives.

Our state would be one of the most conservative if it consisted only of the areas east of the Cascades. The much more populated areas on the west are very socially liberal while the more affluent areas in the greater Seattle metro are fiscally somewhat conservative. People here are tolerant/welcoming of alternative lifestyles, are in favor of abortion, and are not bible thumpers, but they do like to minimize their financial contributions to government.

Just to be clear, that was the OPs response to me, not my post!

It all depends on what measures you use. Social conservatives have different views to fiscal conservatives, some overlap with liberal views depending on which group, so to just say it is "conservative/rightwing" or "liberal" is glossing over all those differences. Other states can be just called conservative because those two groups outnumber the liberals so much (or merge in contradictory ways), but not Washington.

No income tax is liberal. Most true liberals (classic) are on the right in America. Washington Democrats have been dominated by fascist/progressives in recent decades. The last liberal Governor was Dixie Lee Ray. Jay Inslee is a fascist/progressive as are the 1st Amendment hating Murray and Cantwell.
