So my grandparents just sold their home and the property was paid off 20 years ago, but they do not have their documents stating that. The title company is holding a big chuck of their check because they cannot find any paperwork stating it was paid off and told them they need to provide the documents or hire a lawyer to get the rest of the funds. The problem with going to the bank and asking for the documents is that the bank is out of business. Can the title company do that? How else can they get the documents they need? Any help?? Please!

A release of lien is often filed with the county and sent to the owner as part of pay off processing. Those are the two places you normally look for the documentation. The title company does have a responsibility to fully settle the transaction so should work with you to determine the status of any outstanding lien.
