Bellevue Square area (NE 8th down to around SE 6th St.) is walkable. I pretty much use my vehicle only for commuting to work. I walk to the grocery, and almost anything else I need such as dentist, barber, bank, or anything I might need to buy. I am older so my needs are pretty simple; I don't really buy a lot of stuff.

The post office is about 1 mile from me. My hobby is distance running so I find it enjoyable to take an easy jog there when I need to visit USPS. If you want to live without a car, it will make your life easier if you get into distance running. To me it is tedious to walk more than a few blocks, but a couple mile jog to the post office is easy and enjoyable, and you're getting a little extra exercise as an added bonus.

I live in Ridgefield, right outside Vancouver. About 30 minutes north of Portland Oregon. It's a growing town. It used to be a small farm town. But now there's lots of development. There's still the old original Main street with a marketplace. And the old homes with charm. You can walk to the library, city park, marketplace, restaurant. But this is a small town not much else around here. There's area's in Vancouver that you can live near a store. We have the Ctran (city bus system) that I hear is great. It even hooks into the Portland system. Not sure your thoughts on Portland Oregon but it's known for being very non-car friendly.

Walkable means that cars, although accommodated, are not predominant over pedestrians. For that to happen you need density and businesses relying more on foot than car traffic. Otherwise, you have strip malls.

It also means having multiple amenities within walking distance: stores, pharmacies, restaurants, library, movie theatre(s), parks, etc., without arterials/highways and dangerous crossings forming barriers.

Walkable does not mean being able to bepa car-less with ease, however - for that you need robust and frequent transit services. Downtown Burien might be walkable, but being car-less there would be much more difficult than in Capitol Hill, Queen Anne, U District, or parts of Ballard.

Walkable in Washington?

Bremerton, Silverdale, Port Orchard are good choices for walkable.
