Just curious as I'm heading out there in a couple months.

Are you interested in public transit to get around as a tourist, or to evaluate a place to live?

Although many of the mid-size towns have some city bus or commuter bus system, Western Washington is not a place that is renowned for public transit.

Many have tried to get us interested in it, but we're just too attached to our vehicles. So it depends what you are interested in! More info?

Also, do you mean near Seattle, as in only on that side of Puget Sound?

There are several county-based transit authorities, and it is possible to connect among some of them. However, and this is a big however, if a bus from one transit system is late, the connection you want from another transit system will not wait for you. Having a car is pretty much a necessity unless you stay within one system AND its schedule is adequate for you. Busses don't run frequently in the smaller towns and cities.

OK - Are you looking to get around as a tourist, or evaluating commuting options if you were to move here?

What are you looking to use public transit for?

I am familiar with those areas, just not sure what kind of info you need.

To move. Me and my fiancee only have the one vehicle between us. Currently in NJ so if she and I both have work the same day I'll take a bus.

OK - then I'd say there is public transit in both Olympia and Tacoma but you will have to be right in town. There are rural buses to a few stops, but they're an exception. There is also a commuter bus between Oly and Tacoma.

Here's a map of Olympia bus system. When we say Olympia here, we often mean the Oly/Lacey/Tumwater area, the definition, and bus service in this case, covers all three.

With just one car, move to Tacoma. Lots of transit options, unless you need to go to the east county. Sounder commuter rail will take you to Seattle in an hour. Look at Tacoma's Northend (Downtown, the Theater District, Stadium District, Proctor, Old Town, Ruston Way, etc.) or West Tacoma and University Place.
