I always recommend to people who are thinking of moving, that they move to Washington instead of Oregon. Why, because it keeps them out of Oregon.

Sports rivalries seem to fuel most of what enmity exists. It's not just the Ducks, it's Sounders-Timbers. And back in the day, Sonics-Blazers. For us real old-timers, the old Western Hockey League battles between the Seattle Totems and Portland Buckaroos were something to behold.

The two states are far more alike than different, right down to the Cascade curtain that divides the west side from the east.

Losing to a team that is named after a nut will do that to you.

I haven't heard anyone say they hate Oregon, but people from Seattle think their **** doesn't stink and think Seattle is the best city on the planet, no surprise they would look down on Portland (along with everywhere else).

Gotta love those Oregon Blazers, too, eh? Aren't they from Oregon? Nate McMillan decided ta just leave the best NBA team ever, the Sonics, and just go down and coach the Portland Trailblazers on us up here. Burp.

The Portland Trailblazers are owned by Seattle billionaire Paul Allen.

Been my experience having lived in both Portland and Seattle is that Portlanders tend to compare themselves to Seattle quite a bit, with some envy for the major sports teams and major university that Seattle has. But Portlanders are also very quick to have a superiority complex on a whole lot of levels from urban planning, transit, beer pubs, livability, and so forth.

On the other hand, Seattleites, especially the majority who really aren't from there, rarely ever even think of Portland or Oregon and tend to compare their city more to Vancouver and San Francisco. Seattleites just don't really think of Portland as a peer city. At least not when I lived there.

I don't hate Oregon, I like living and working in WA (no income tax) and shopping in OR (no sales tax). I do prefer living on this side of the Columbia, though.

I have a good friend who lives in Portland, and really like that city. I thought about moving there a few years ago, but decided it wasn't really different enough from Seattle. I think Portland is a little mellower and more livable than Seattle, but unfortunately the jobs generally don't pay nearly as well.

I think the perception of OR as a somewhat less sophisticated sibling of WA is somewhat justified. WA is more urban, diverse, and has more noteworthy employers, schools, research facilities, etc. OR is much less crowded though, which is the price of WA's notoriety.
