There is a bottleneck around JBLM that can add another 20 minutes to what is a 30 minute commute, generally.

Most times it takes me 45 minutes to get from downtown Olympia to downtown Tacoma.

UGH!!!! That's one of the top reasons I MOVED!!! I lived in Lacey, worked in Tacoma .... exactly 28 miles from door-to-door. It took 45-50 minutes on a perfect day, no traffic incidents, no Ft. Lewis (JBLM) hang-ups. On a Friday afternoon of a holiday weekend in the summer you'd be better off to hang out at a bar until after 11pm or so. Otherwise it'll take somewhere in the neighborhood of two hours. Good luck.

I don't live over there anymore (thank God), but we drove through that area last Friday. Granted, it was the start of a holiday weekend - but it was about 1:30pm, not anywhere close to rush hour - and from the time at the on-ramp from Hwy 18 (to Auburn/Issaquah) to Olympia was over two hours. Didn't make it above 35mph at any point in that stretch.

Just reminded me again of how happy I am to not live in that traffic anymore.

I've done this commute. I would plan on it being at least an hour. More if it's peak time or someone crashes in front of you.

It took me 40-45 minutes to travel West through Tacoma and Olympia today, on a Saturday afternoon. Of course traffic flowed much more freely once I made it past JBLM. I saw no signs of plans of lane expansion, so I wouldn't expect the traffic congestion in that area to improve soon.

Is the commute from Tacoma to Olympia better during normal working hours than Olympia to Tacoma?

Non rush hour times are pretty smooth for the most part. 12-1 is kinda rough around the JBLM area because of lunch time.
