We lived in Tacoma and really like it by JBLM and are wondering if it would be a good place to retire too. We are both still young enough to work and are trying to figure this all out.

I retired from the military in 2008 and decided to take some years off from full-time work for awhile. Moved to New Mexico to my wife's hometown.

In 2011, I got a federal job in Seattle and lived in the burbs. My commissary/exchange was JBLM.

In 2015, I got a promotion with my agency and moved to Spokane. Now I use Fairchild AFB.

I would say it's pretty good for military retirement as its not taxed by the state. Just have to make sure you budget and make enough to support yourself with or without a second career!

Great place for military retirement, if you get to your last penny.... Retsil WaState Vets home can accomidate you and a spouse with free everything, and a tax free view of Bremerton / ferries. Buses come to Retsil once per hour, so you can get to Seattle for very cheap on. Subsidized pass.

Washington Veterans Home Retsil | WDVA

Other great tax free VA centric choices with great access to recreation... WY and SD.

For retiring, not so much. The COL is insane. You could get the same scenery in KY and your money would, at a minimum, go twice as far. If it's a must, eastern Washington is where it's at. That's generally where most WA retirees go to make their dollar go further.

We loved it in Washington when we were first stationed here in the late 80s and decided to come back here to retire. We were fortunate to get JBLM as out last duty station before ETSing and stayed put. We're 20 minutes south of JBLM in Olympia. It's a very nice place to live and close enough to JBLM for taking advantage of the services offered, like gym, commissary, medical and Space A flights.
