I was studying the 2016 map vs 2012 and noticed a trend. Most of the counties that voted Democrat in 2012/2008 went to Donald Trump and Bill Bryant in 2016. Here are statistics:

In the 2012 presidential election, Clallam, Jefferson, Grays Harbor, Mason, and Pacific counties all voted for Obama. All of the same ones voted for Inslee besides Clallam and Mason counties.

Fast forward to 2016, and Clallam, Grays Harbor, Mason, and Pacific counties all switched to Republican for both Donald Trump and Bill Bryant. Only Jefferson county remained Democrat.

Is it following the trend of the blue collar workers and "rust belt" voters in Iowa, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan? Is the coast/peninsula similar with their demographics in the sense that they have a lot of blue collar workers who are unhappy with the Democrats? It would be interesting to see why there was such a big switch.

2012 county election map:
President: President/Vice President
Governor: Governor

2016 county election map:

President: November 8, 2016 General Election Results - President/Vice President County Breakdown
Governor: November 8, 2016 General Election Results - Governor County Breakdown

Well, it just goes to show that in some states, dividing Electoral College votes by county or precinct, as Maine and Nebraska do, would divide the state. Due to greater population, Western WA would still bring in more votes, probably, but Trump would have gotten votes from E WA, if it hadn't been a winner-take-all state. WA is a half-red state.

Trump appealed to areas hurt by loss of jobs to outsourcing and environmental regulation. The decimated lumber industry in those counties affected a lot of people who have still not recovered.

Default What made most of the Olympic Peninsula and costal counties flip to Republican for 2016?

Movement here by retiring deplorables, expansion and construction of the Trailer Park industry, Magnetic Weapon testing by the Navy.

Lack of jobs and buying into his message that he'll bring jobs back to the US somehow. Even if they would in reality just be a few highly skilled jobs managing the automated machines rather than going back to the "good old days" where you could walk out of high school and get a low skill union job with decent pay and benefits.

Devastation inflicted on many rural areas and small towns by preceding administrations, who seem to be OK with turning all into wasteland, unless it's "2nd homes" areas for rich city professionals, wealthy snowbirds or people who live off investment income. While Trump is not a democrat, he doesn't represent Republican establishment either.

People are tired of the process gradually turning the US into a 3rd world country.
