My husband and I are trying to find an area to live around Seattle. We'd love to find a house where you aren't staring into someone else's window all the time and has a larger backyard. I'd rather not use the ferry. Our budget is $450-500k.

Good luck.

I was going to suggest Kitsap peninsula, until I read your message.

I do see some places on Vashon going for under 500K. I'll bet there are some on Whidbey too. Probably not on Bainbridge though.

Vashon has a water taxi to downtown Seattle, it's noticeably cheaper than the ferry. Runs only during daylight commuting hours, and you obviously don't have your car with you when you get there. Lots of folks use it. The Vashon bus makes the crossing to Faunterloy at certain times, and the C bus stops right there. Lots of people also just walk on.

Not saying you can't find something in your price range - Seattle is a pretty big place - but it will require some serious legwork, and maybe a compromise or three on condition and/or location of the home.

You might search White Center, some bigger yards there that may meet your budget.

Moneoe, Snohomish, Mill Creek, Auburn, Maple Valley. All have newer typical suburban developments but also have rural homes on acreage. The farther you get from Seattle the lower the prices.

The 98178 zip code has a surprising number of houses on larger lots, in or close to your price range.

What do you mean by "around Seattle"? Commuting, working at home, trust-funded, retired?
