Hello all,

I am considering moving to the Hood Canal area, but I'm not finding a lot of information on how to meet people and make friends in the area.

I'm in my late 30s and like art, crafts, walking in the woods, kayaking, nature watching, cats, and theater. What are some suggestions on places to go to meet locals (and become a local).

Thanks!

Where in the Hood Canal area? Silverdale and Poulsbo are near there. You can look into kayaking clubs and so on, when you get there. I'm sure there are some activity groups like that.

See if there are local and neighborhood facebook groups where people chat about local goings-on... from community news to crime watch, to garage sales. If you're into gardening or horses or chickens or something, join groups for those interests... We have several in this area. I've met many local people through these groups, and it's a great way to follow what is going on... from lost dogs, to bear sightings to car crashes on the highway or unexplained loud noises.... Even local controversies.

Ruth: I am thinking about the Hoodsport area, but I will check out Poulsbo and Silverdale. I don't mind some driving on occasion.

Great idea Diana, thank you!

So, are you looking at the $175k or the $2.5m place?

The nearest town of any size would be Shelton.

Crazy Donkey, definitely not the 2.5 million one. My budget is significantly more modest. Its a stunning home though.

Spend time in Port Townsend and Gig Harbor on the weekends. Check out the libraries. Look at local paper calendars for farmers markets, arts & crafts events, etc. Might be some meetups in the bigger nearby cities. Bring cookies and a hello to a few neighbor doorsteps.

Volunteer at community service events, and a Kayak / sailing / camping / photo club. You will gain a great group of friends and learn a lot from them. I did Master Gardeners when I arrived in PNW from an arid Mtn state. Volunteer opportunities were vast and I learned a LOT!~

All those activities are available in the area, and then some. Just know that many organizations consist mainly of retirees. If you are fine with that, you’ll find lots to do and people to meet.

PT has all of those in one town. The catch is that it is expensive either to rent or to buy. Without knowing your housing budget (other than “not millions”) it is hard to recommend it. So many visit, become enamored of it, and find out they cannot afford to live there.

At your age, I assume job opportunities also matter. PT is not so hot in that regard.

if you need a j-o-b... keep on the Olympia direction (or plan to commute to Bremerton / Silverdale)

Or nab a Gov job and live happily ever after.

PNNL Sequim would be a nice gig.

There are a lot of artists, actors, and kayaker's living back in the woods. We have a few artist friends who live 'off-grid' in PNW and do very nice (profitable) work from their studios. Raised their families on 100% artist income, and now enjoying empty nests. They survived fine!
