I would love to hear opinions on this. I am looking for an alternative to Seattle - are they similar in feel or is one considered more appealing or desirable? I'm looking for a safe walkable neighborhood without tons of hipsters. I'm 61 and would like to be around people over 50 for the most part.

Historic North Everett (especially west of Colby and north of 19th) and North End Tacoma both have excellent qualities. I'd recommend going and spending time in each. Go sit at Bluebeard Coffee Shop in Tacoma and Zippy's Organic Coffee Shop in Historic North Everett. Grab a coffee, talk to people, feel the vibe of both places.

Both have 1 hour commuter rail to Downtown Seattle.

Thanks...I've been to both a few times but want to hear what others have to say about them.

I like Everett, I think it unfairly gets a bad rap. That Historic North Everett area is gorgeous, one of the most intact historic home districts in Puget Sound. The Everett waterfront, which already has one of the biggest public marinas on the West Coast, is getting huge makeover with loads of restaurants, a promenade. There is an old fashioned quality to this area, people walk and talk with each other, it's refreshing.

Everett. I Lived there while Stationed at the Naval Base from 1998-2000. Visited last year while on Vacation. We stayed at the Navy Lodge up I Marysville. I liked living there, No issues. The weather did not bother me. It is cooler then Seattle and Tacoma. You are far enough away from Seattle, yet can visit when you need to.

If not commuting, why not look at Bellingham?

Maybe...but it might feel too remote (have a couple of friends in Seattle area). But I have thought about it. Wondered if it might be too young of a town due to the university.

It is safe, very walkable. Excellent bus system. Very good downtown. The "student" areas are mostly east of the campus and south of State St. Lots of areas with relatively few students - there are approx. 16,000 WWU students, but a population of close to 90,000. The university gives you lectures, extension courses, etc.

Commutes to Seattle from Everett seem worse than from Tacoma to Seattle.

But, you’re closer to the more scenic part of Puget Sound like the San Juan Islands for example, plus Vancouver BC is just under 2 hours if there’s no traffic or border wait
