We're considering a job offer for my husband in Tacoma. We've always loved Gig Harbor, but I'm not sure how feasible a commute would be.

Our main consideration is that the community be family friendly. We're looking at rent/mortgage ina the $2K-$2,500 range.

Finally, is there such a thing as a banana belt in or around Tacoma? He would be willing to drive further for sunshine.

I have gone from Tacoma (near the Port) to Gig Harbor a several times at 4-4:30PM and it can be a nasty commute, short but totally clogged up. Last time I was going to the Purdy Rd exit and it took about an hour, should be 20 minutes. No, there is no banana belt anywhere near Tacoma, it gets a couple of inches/year more than Seattle, gig Harbor a couple of inches more than Tacoma. Going north it only gets worse until you get all the way to Sequim (90 miles). Going south same thing, in fact Tacoma itself has the lowest rainfall within a reasonable commute, and the north and west parts are nice, lower crime such as the Stadium District, Fircrest and Brown's Point.

The bridge tolls coming from Gig Harbor will cost $5 a day with the GoodtoGo pass... That starts to be real money if you're doing it every day. Maybe there's a bus.

If you really want a smaller town feel... try Day Island area, Ruston, or Dupont.

My sister-in-law commutes from Port Orchard to Tacoma every day, so Gig Harbor is definitely feasible.
