There is a new saying which I never heard before in my 62 years which is "June Gloom" not only has it been in June but in July also. The weather people don't want you to know the truth. Panic and alarm. The truth is the Jet stream split off going over the top of Alaska and the second stream going through California. Alaska broke records of 90 degrees which is 5 degrees beyond any previous record. Here in Washington state I have never seen a dismal summer such as the one I am witnessing. June, July and August are always sunny at least from my memory bank of 62 years. This year nothing but clouds and rain. I am wearing my winter coat as I write this. Never ever have these weather conditions existed in the summer. Houston we have a problem!!! I will tell you after research this is the problem... The arctic ice has melted 50% which is the air conditioner for the entire globe. The Jet stream is disturbed big time and we are experiencing the consequences. I am just glad that I am 62 and not 22 so that I don't have to witness the horrible effects about to come. If you only knew the real truth. Hurricanes, floods, fires... you haven't seen anything yet in comparison for what will be. They won't tell you neither. Panic...No more economy! Sad but true. When your a senior citizen and you experience the difference all of a sudden then you have the right to respond here.

I believe the term is a California import from both SoCal and the Bay area, where the phenomenon is the usual state of affairs. Happens because by June, inland areas are heating up, and when the heated inland air meets the cool coastal air, fog and low-lying clouds develop. Later in the year, as coastal areas warm, the fog and clouds occur less frequently.

Of course, we are seeing changes in other weather patterns, but there is nothing new about June Gloom.

Remember, blame every weather anomaly on "climate change" implying "anthropogenic climate change" that will allegedly be resolved by sequestering carbon, and taxes on air.
Please ignore the fact that the "heat trapping" atmosphere cools the planet, and the highest recorded temperature (134F) has not been exceeded, despite generations of "trapping heat."
The Church of the Warming Planet will bless you for your piety.

We have been here 25 years and are also in our 60s. Typically it's been cool and wet through July 4th, then sunny and warmer until mid-September. So this year we have had an extra couple of weeks of rain, not a big deal, in fact it's more than made up for by the very unusual nice days we had in May and June. Wearing a winter coat? It's still in the 70s in the daytime and 60s at night, even with the rain. Just a windbreaker is sufficient even for my wife who is always cold.

depends on the part of the state you're in- southern Washington has been overall maybe a little cooler this summer, but not insanely so. We've had a good number of 80 degree and mostly sunny days so far.

Never is a very long time! 1816 is called "The year without summer." What about the ice ages?

It's been mostly in the 70's, with some days very close to 80. Sure it's not blazing hot, but it's not a bad summer- it's actually nearly perfect! It certainly is not winter coat weather...

And you don't have to go back too far to find a cooler summer- 2011 was the year they dubbed here in Seattle as "the year without a summer", where it only got above 80 degrees once.

Oh good grief! This is been a wonderful summer so far! Especially the cool cloudy part! A welcome break!

I’m pretty sure several weeks ago now there was a thread posted here about how we were doomed to live in hot and dry drought and it was never going to rain again, all the trees were going to die.

This is all in the range of normal weather for us :-) People have very selective memory when it comes to weather. If you look on the drought threads from earlier this spring, I’m pretty sure I said the same thing then.

Yup. Screwed. IMO
In the meantime, I'd eat more cherries ( FredMeyer/QFC, Safeway @<$2). Cheap.

Weather in the PNW has always had a huge range of variation. There is no "typical" weather. You get what you get and it will not be the same every year.
