I can't read the story at the link because I don't have NYT subscription. :-(

Here is some Oregon love for the Washington side:

https://www.oregonlive.com/travel/20...he_washin.html

I will add that perhaps the biggest tourist attraction on the near WA side is (sadly) Legends Casino in Toppenish, though it is an hour+ from the river. It is the closest major casino for the central gorge, though there is another out east in Pendleton.

and what do you mean, who are the Bees?
Not a movie.

Look up the history of the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area.

Long story made way too simplistic - Oregonians wanted to limit development in the Gorge, Washingtonians wanted more development. Salmon survival and Indian treaty rights were also factors in the mix.

That's been 30 years ago. For some people, it's still a hot issue.

The Gorge is a really great place to live, so take your pick -

a) it's great because its designation as a scenic area worked
b) it's great in spite of its designation as a scenic area

This may work - https://outline.com

Also, just try googling the name of the NYT article. NYT articles are often picked up by other newspapers, and are run with no change in the headline.

The Oregonian had extensive independent coverage of the Bea house controversy, and IIRC, Willamette Week did also.

unfortunately Bonneville Hot Springs is closed (again)

Carson Hot Springs is still open, but it is a bath-house / not swimming and spa.

Skamania Lodge library (2nd level) is a great place for a stormy winter day.
