If it is a purebred dog you can contact the breed rescue for that breed. You can find the rescues through the AKC.

The purebred rescues will not usually take mutts, but a few of them will take dogs that are half bred. The Scottish Deerhound Club with take staghounds and sometimes a lurcher and the Japanese Chin Club will take halfbreeds. Mostly, though, just purebred, although they will take puppy mill "purebreds"

So, it depends a lot upon what type of dog it is.

If your dog is muttsky, it is better off at the humane society than to advertise to give it away. Bad people sometimes are looking for free dogs and at least the humane society will do some screening before they place the dog in a new home.

Humane society workers see a lot of bad stuff. They get tired of their customers but that doesn't mean that the pets aren't getting good care.

Too bad they can't put on happier faces when dealing with the humans involved in these rescues, though. I respect everyone who is honestly working to help canines and all kinds of animals and reptiles. It's a tall order these days with human selfishness at an all-time high.
