A delivery of test kit materials that would have allowed Bellingham’s St. Joseph hospital and other PeaceHealth medical facilities in the Northwest to run COVID-19 tests quicker were seized and diverted by the federal government to the East Coast, PeaceHealth reports.

The Los Angeles Times first reported about the federal government quietly seizing orders for medical supplies made by hospitals in a story Tuesday, April 7. Those seizures came despite President Trump directing states and hospitals to secure what supplies they could to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s incredibly frustrating,” PeaceHealth Chief Operating Officer Richard DeCarlo told the Times. “We had put wheels in motion with testing and protective equipment to allow us to secure and protect our staff and our patients.”
Quote:
The materials seized from PeaceHealth include vital test kit materials that are needed to run in-house analyzer machines, PeaceHealth Manager of Public Affairs Jeremy Rush told The Bellingham Herald in an email.
Quote:
If PeaceHealth hospitals had received the test kit materials and been able to do in-house testing, Rush wrote, and then it more quickly could rule out patients that tested negative for COVID-19. That, in turn, would have allowed the hospital to conserve personal protective equipment at a greater rate.
So, Trump basically said: Provide your own damn supplies; we're the backup. When the governors fail [because we stole their supplies], we'll swoop in and save you [with supplies stolen from someone else].

I've read other reports about this happening and it's just unbelievable. Trump says "states solve your own problems!" then he uses the power of the federal to take what the states order and pay for. Then what - will he claim he saved the day by providing the equipment he took from the states?! It's not like Bellingham has more power than the federal government so they have to just stand there and take it.

Trumps' son-in-law Jared Kushner, who has been given extraordinary (and uncheckable) powers during this crisis, is no-doubt going to rake in substantial profits as he "redistributes" these goods.

The Trainwreck-In-Chief told governors, the federal gov't is not a shipping clerk.

He lied.

While it was being reported as, "too bad, you're on your own", then sticks out his tongue, cause "OMB", what he was actually telling Governors was that if they could order supplies directly on their own without the red tape to do so, and to use Fed as back up.
As far as government ineptitude on the follow through, I can't say, but people sure do believe the editorialized headline aimed at making Trump sound awful way too much. Believe me, I'm aware of the fact he doesn't need any help in that department much of the time.

But yeah, this confiscation stuff is disturbing. I hope Bellingham squeaks that wheel and gets their supplies. .

You realize what one of the signs of Socialism (TM) is, don't you? Central Planning; when the federal gov't decides what supplies and goods go where, and in what quantity, without consulting with the various regional authorities about their needs.

It is a switcheroo. It is also, however, indicative of continuing problems with testing - hospitals finally have enough tests, but not enough supplies to use the tests, resulting with the feds stealing the supplies from those that need them to give them to others that need them more - which is a failure from the top. If there had been real planning and coordination at the top, rather than governing on a whim, those shortages would have been anticipated (by anyone with half a brain).

Trump said, "Let there be tests," and there were, but not the supplies needed to use them - because no one below him dared to second-quess him.

This is pretty much the way the Soviet Union worked. And people wonder why it crashed... It had nothing to do with the arms race.

What I don't understand is, will whoever ordered and paid for the supplies get reimbursed? Who exactly paid for the stuff, anyway: the hospital? County health? Is this an outright confiscation, or will the fed authority (whoever it was) at least make gestures of "buying" it from the entity they "diverted" it from?

The Bellingham shipment was for Peace Health/St. Joseph's. They were for testing machines provided by FEMA, but without the supplies needed to actually use them.

Shipments to health systems in Minnesota, Florida, Massachussets, and Texas were also seized.

No telling whether anyone will be reimbursed.

Don't the feds gave a basic list of supplies needed to operate the equipment they are sending do that those supplies get sent along with it? Is basic planning like that an issue? If so, Lord I hope we don't get in a big war anytime soon.
