Hi!
We're recent transplants to Vancouver, Wa. and we've been enjoying some beautiful areas within a few hours drive on the occasional weekend So far we've been to the Oregon Coast, Silver State Park in Oregon, Leavenworth area, and poked around some of the Puget Sound so far and day trips to regional parks and driving along the Columbia.

In a few days we'll be leaving for a week long trip to the Olympic Peninsula, but apparently hubs still has vacation days his boss is pressuring him to take before the end of the year, so we're looking at a 4 day weekend in early November.

Any suggestions for general areas that time of year? Most likely the fall colors would be gone in the mountains, but maybe too early for snow? We're even thinking of heading over to the Spokane/Coeur D'lane area? We'd love to see the San Juan Islands, but heard it could be extra difficult because of Covid. Trying to keep it fairly simple with a few scenic drives, moderate hiking, maybe some biking (not mountain biking though.)

Thanks! We love living here so far. Hubby's from England and he taught me to enjoy rain!

Having been here 26 years now, I would consider November to be the worst month of the year for bad weather. Plenty of rain, even lowland snow some years, and almost always a damaging windstorm. It would definitely not be a time for me to go on a vacation in western WA. In fact we have gone on vacation twice in November. . .to Hawaii. Spokane normally gets snow after about the 2nd week of November. Not usually enough to enjoy the views, but enough to make driving difficult. If you haven't already, I would suggest a waterfall tour in Oregon, along the historic Columbia River Highway that runs parallel to highway 84. There will be plenty of water running in the falls by then, but be prepared for some muddy trails.

A visit to Leavenworth would be fun. It's a very scenic area with a Bavarian themed downtown area and they decorate for the holidays. Good food & outdoor activities, too.

Astoria and Cape Disappointment on the other side of the bridge. One of my favorite places. Instead of driving up to the Astoria Column, you can take a short hike there, it’s nice.

Early Nov... I prefer dry weather and fall leaf colors... (and bringing home more apples / fruit from east side)

I would do a loop through Oregon Blue Mtns (Joesph) and to Moscow, ID, then include Walla Walla (a very nice winter vacation city on dry side) / on the way home. Travel back to Vancouver on SR 14. Stop at state parks (including Petroglyphs). Maryhill... In 'non-covid' times, I like to attend events in Walla Walla, https://www.slcww.org/ and https://www.whitman.edu/. Walla Walla has a very nice downtown / hotel https://marcuswhitmanhotel.com/
You could add Tri-cities and have plenty to do just in that region (without journeying to Blue Mtns). Nearby Waitsburg has some very interesting older homes. Dayton is close to WA Blue Mtns for hiking (But Nov likely is deer hunting season)

Alternatively you could do Spokane / Sandpoint, but it is nicer during snow / skiing and in spring. (As is Palouse Falls (higher run-off) + Palouse farming region (South of Spokane) is gorgeous in spring with varieties of green crops blanketing the hillsides.
Spokane is fun for Farm Chicks flea Market (Non-Covid spring event) https://thefarmchicks.com/ https://www.facebook.com/thefarmchicks/
or the fall Quilt show https://wsqspokane.org/quilt-show/

How about a few days at the Tokeland Hotel? Even if the weather is bad, the food is fantastic. There might still be some clamming going on. 4 days might be a lot in Tokeland, but you can break it up with a couple of nights at The Shelburne in Long Beach. Take a book, walk the beach, cuddle by a fire, hike, eat.

Go poke around Vancouver, BC. Stanley Park, Capilano Suspension Bridge, the University of BC Museum, etc. Plenty to do in that city by walking around. Drive 99 north along the coast. Good food too.

Bend Oregon is awesome all year, although subject to snow. The drive up around Mt Bachelor can be incredible, typically it’s dry although it can be cold that time of year. Still, sun will be shining most of the time

The border will probably not be open.
